10 Reasons to Vote No

  1. You Irish are so lucky getting the chance to vote no to the Lisbon Treaty… Ireland is the only country to hold a referendum on it. The others didn’t dare.

Crossing my fingers (in Norway) that in Ireland the noes will have it!

  2. Hi Fay Gjester

We will NOT disappoint you, watch Ireland, watch a comfortable win for the NO voters. You have been deprived of your chance to vote!!!!! What kind of democracy is THAT??? And if Lisbon goes ahead, NO-ONE in Europe will ever be allowed to vote on anything in the future. It is VITAL to defeat this treaty/this scam. Or maybe this is the Germans trying for a THIRD time to control Europe??? VERY VERY POSSIBLE. Thanks for your support, please PRAY for a no vote, thanks

  3. Sean

I have approved your comment on this blog, only because i don’t think anyone gains from censorship.

However, you are at best misguided on Norway as a place, a government and most importantly as a people.

I do agree that whale hunting is wrong, but it doesn’t justify such a rude post.

  12. There’s a great deal of scaremongering going on, much so from SF MEP Mary Lou McDonald, however I feel that this does distort the views of those who have no idea about what they are indeed voting for, in many respects the NO compaign serves as nothing more than a mechanism to lull those with no interest in politics or Europe as a whole to flog their vote to them while instead not actually challenging what the YES side have said.

There’s been very little satisfactory debate on this issue because of the fact that the NO side in particular refuse to let the YES side get a word in, and every action that they perform, be it the disgusting excuse for a debate on Tuesday night’s Q&A or indirect confrontations such as at rallys or support canvasing, proves that the NO side really don’t have much of a leg to stand on.

It is true that if you cherry pick and examine EVERYTHING in the treaty as word for word, there’s going to be something which is going to rile up some people, the sad thing is that everything riles up someone, it’s nature, but if the treaty’s taken as a soverign concept or idea, it’s clearly going to benifit Europe as a whole.

The final thing I wish to take issue with is the entire idea that there’d be a chance to negotiate the treaty for a better ireland, as Mr Adams has said on a few occasions, This is in greater eventuality the end of the lisbon road, this is not a stepping stone to something better, this is nothing more than history repeating itself similar to people’s view that home rule was a stepping stone to independence, which would have made the rebellion in 1916 pointless. Was the rebellion not an action that A, went against the “stepping stone philosophy” and B, an action that was STRONGLY supported now as the action which brought about independence, a positive action, which is why I do not understand ANY party which did stem from actions of 1916 can be against Lisbon!

Idealogically your campaign has been riddled with hypocracy and shamed with pathetic attempts at confusing voters.

  17. Hello,
I’m french but , for ever, I love Ireland !
    Thanks for this big “No!”

  18. Many thanks to the brave people of Ireland !

After the Dutch and French voters you have put another nail in the coffin of the undemocratic EU constitution (relabelled as Lisbon treaty)! So you have shown to be most courageous Europeans under enormous pressure from Brussels.
Here in Germany we didn’t have a referendum (as f… usual) but I am sure it would have resulted in a no vote as well.
Your vote is a vote for maintaining workers rights, quality public services and against an increase in military spending. Let’s work for a social and democratic European Union with a strong EU parliament.

    Kai,

  19. Well I say that it’s a jolly bad show that you chaps in Ireland have voted against the Lisbon Treaty. The nay sayers across Europe have alot to answer for. It’s absolutely scandalous that people, such as the Irish, who have gained so much from their membership of the EEC, should trash a vital piece of leglislation in this manner. We should ratify this treaty forthwith and whatever the consequences. Here’s to a United States of Europe.

  20. Well said Scroggins. The very concept of a United Ireland within a United States of Europe would surely be the way to go and a ‘consumation devoutly to be wished’ Let’s demand the new Euro currency for Britain immediately.

  21. Practically, I do not know English, so I first of all apologize for possible linguistic mistakes.

I was one from thousand the citizens of European countries which signed on side appeal http://www.irish-friends-vote-no-for-me.org Now, I – with satisfaction – can write : I thank Ireland!

We with pride remember the event with history (relief of Vienna – 1683, Battle of Warsaw – 1920), when Poles influenced with their working on fate of Europe. May Irishmen’s decision, she would stop these which undertake risky for European civilization working today. Arguments visit different. Let’s defend however our traditional Christian, West – European culture and freedom of every of us. The nations of Europe beheld to this already probably, to does not permit politicians’ small group to decide in defiance of citizens’ businesses.

We in Polish national hymn have word: ” Gave on example Bonaparte how to win we have”. These were the times when many Poles entered to fighting at side of the emperor’s army Frenchmen legions, seeing in her parade the chance on expulsion the invaders and the reconstruction of state (first European state at which Constitution was resolved). She gave on Ireland example now. You proved, that the commitment the citizens can be effective even then, when the supports have not in power (which however it does not destroy their initiative), that the nation can and he should demand from his representatives exerting oneself about good right and rejection of this, which is bad.

  22. Thank you, Ireland !

You were the only ones able to force EU leaders to respect France and Netherlands’s NO to the EU “constitution”. You showed them that Europe cannot be done against the people !

For a free, democratic, pacifist and social Europe, thank you, Ireland !

  23. Sorry to disappoint Ireland and it’s army of new found Euro sceptics, but the Euro ‘Bootboys’ are going to get this treaty ratified at ‘whatever’ cost and if this means penalising Ireland until they ‘conform’, then so be it. Clearly, this treaty was not presented in a transparant enough form or in due time, for the Irish electorate to grasp even the fundamentals of it. This alone gave the Nay sayers enough credence to cast sufficient doubt upon the entire process.

  24. Hello from Greece

thank you Ireland! We want a Europe of democracy, social state and based on our coommon values…Not a Union based on the market and the military action.
Thank you Irish people! – a different Europe is possible!

    PASOK (greek socialist party) member

  25. From looking at these responses I am now glad I have voted no. I am a pro-European Irishman that believes that at the heart of Europe lies it’s prosperous peoples. Europe and it’s union was not born for the people we elect to power to tell us what to do, it was born of an idea that instead of war and economic ruin that we faced after the second world war, that we could indeed build a peace for all of Europe and enjoy the fruits of our accomplishments. Under Lisbon, how could we?

Presidents that are elected by Brussels and not by 500 million Europeans, courts that say non-nationals that work on our building sites are not entitled to the same rates of pay and union benefits that EU citizens enjoy while overlooking exploitation of these individuals. A Europe that wants to further militarize (Which I think is why Sarcozy is so into bullying Ireland for saying no) and increase military spending while our healhcare and pension systems are on the verge of collapse… A Europe that places more interest on it’s currency than it’s workers that enable the government to have it’s currency. Have we as Europeans not had enough Dictators?

How about this. Majority rules. A commisioner for every state. A president elect with more powers than even Lisbon offers but elected by the peoples of Europe based on the principles of that one man. America has done quite well with it’s system in the twentieth century, why can Europe not have a proper democratic system that allows it’s people to be at the forefront of governance? Why can’t Europe be the Superpower for the Twenty First century?

  26. Michael Collins would roll in his grave if he was here now.

  27. I really think that Ireland should be eliminated from the EU. They tooked all the EU money and now are rejecting a good project for Europe. With this kind of atitude Europe will sucomb in front of China and other rising economies.
